Her inspiration often comes from the landscape, which she discovered and explored in detail when she and her family moved out of Toronto to the rolling Ontario countryside. \“I fell under the peculiar spell of black and white photography almost 50 years ago. The images I saw then, in particular my father’s large-format work, left an irresistible urge to myself document the magical dance of light and shadow.

\“Today this venerable art form, created via traditional film and wet-darkroom processes, still holds endless possibility. Loading my vintage 8x10 field camera into its case, shouldering the big wooden tripod and setting out with enough film holders to capture an early, misty morning, is my start to a perfect day.

\“The word photography comes from the ancient Greek. It means, literally, writing with light. For me, nothing is more satisfying than framing the wandering interplay of radiance and perception, and the interwoven truths they reveal.\”

Doug’s photographs are printed using a platinum/ palladium technique developed in the 1800s, well before silver gelatin became the dominant technology of black and white photography.

First the artist mixes and coats a light-sensitive platinum emulsion onto heavy rag paper. When this dries, a large negative, the size of the end print, is placed in firm contact with the coating and exposed to an ultraviolet light source, traditionally the sun. The result, faintly visible after a few minutes or a few hours, is developed to completion in a chemical bath and thoroughly washed.

The platinotype images produced through this laborious technique are renowned for their delicacy, luminosity and extraordinary depth. We look ‘at’ a silver-based print; we look 'into' a platinum photograph.

Tom majored in art at the University of Redlands in California and received his MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1969.

In 1969 he moved to Nova Scotia, co-founded the Mermaid Theatre where he was the resident designer for fifteen years. In 1987 he began painting full time. His favorite medium is acrylic on linen or canvas.

His early work featured subjects of a gentle, surreal nature, followed by paintings of classical still life subjects. In 2002 Miller added landscape paintings to his repertoire.

Tom has exhibited regularly since 1987, participating in many shows in Canada and The United States and Taiwan.

It was during those years that he became keenly aware of the variety of textures and colours of the northern natural beauty that was all about him. His college years were spent in the Toronto area studying commercial art. He then studied and graduated from a four year advertising design course in the U.S.A. He has worked as a commercial artist for twenty five plus years and presently owns and operates an advertising firm, preparing materials for national accounts. Doug has traveled in over fifty five countries, and has worked abroad in Europe and in South America. He spent three years in London England and six years in Quito, Ecuador working in international media. During that time he traveled into the Amazon rain forest, the Monteverde rain forest in Costa Rica, and the Galapagos Islands. He has hiked the high ranges of the Andes where he observed first hand the rugged textures of the vast peaks of the Andes along with the constant weather phenomena only found in the high country the world over. Previously in Europe, he also hiked and climbed in the Alps and the Pyranees mountains and Norway. These adventures have heightened his awareness of the vast diversity found in the natural world.

He has shown his paintings at the National Museum of Ecuador and has done commission work for members of the government of Ecuador.
